I
know why the caged bird sings
2006
This
mechanical sculpture was commissioned by the Shire Hall Gallery
in Stafford which has an intact C19th courtroom. I was struck
by the holding cell beneath the courtroom which is just a steel
cage with a small wooden bench and imagined the feelings of the
defendants awaiting their fate. When 20p is inserted a bird in
the man's chest flaps it's wings, wags it's tail, lights up and
sings. The man's head also lights up and looks up when you approach
him
