Commissioned by Wild Rumpus for Chester Zoo ‘Symphonic rain’ is a kinetic water sound sculpture which runs on solar and wind power. Rain is collected by a large steel funnel and stored in a central recycled storage tank. Every fifteen minutes the water is then released via programmed solenoids into twelve balanced cups. As the cups fill they tip and their arms hit a series of cymbals creating rhythmic sound from the captured rain.
