Vortex is a chalk drawing machine created for the Heath Robinson Museum’s ‘Contraptions & Connections’ exhibition. The blackboard disc rotates clockwise while a motorised arm carrying a flexible chalk holder rotates in the opposite direction, creating an ever increasing build up of elliptical lines around a dark centre. The weight which holds the chalk against the board is suspended by a knotted piece of string as a reference to the contraption drawings of Heath Robinson.
